EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

During an emergency incident Wayside Commons Management will be coordinating efforts with governmental authorities and professional services to identify where the emergency exists and to minimize property damage.

It is expected that all Merchants are knowledgeable of emergency conditions and take appropriate measures to inform their employees of procedures to protect their personal safety and their business interests.

Responding to emergencies requires anticipating crises and establishing procedures for organized and effective responses.

EVACUATION PROCEDURES

If evacuation is necessary please follow the procedures as outlined below.

  • Be prepared to assist in orderly evacuation of all employees and customers.
  • Remain calm.
  • Form an organized line.
  • Exit from the closest exit.
  • Keep talking to a minimum.
  • Once outside the building, please go to a predetermined meeting place away from the building.
Officials will notify you, when it is safe to return to your store.

Note: It is extremely important that your Demised Premises be kept clear of any parcels or objects which obstruct egress from your space or the building. The safety of everyone is of prime concern.

FIRE

In order to minimize property damage and possible injury, familiarize yourself with the fire prevention devices within your Demised Premises and the common areas. Know the locations of fire extinguishers and exits.

Please inspect your store regularly and remove any items that can start or contribute to a fire, or which might be a safety hazard, for example; old rags, newspapers, packing materials, and cardboard boxes.

The fire alarm system at Wayside Commons should sound an alarm and connect directly to the Burlington Fire Department if any of the following occurs:

  • A manual pull station is operated.
  • A smoke detector is activated.
  • A sprinkler head is activated.
  • A significant change in water pressure to the sprinkler system occurs.
If a fire is detected the following procedures should be followed.
  • Activate the nearest pull station.
  • Do not panic; follow the evacuation procedures listed above.
  • Do not open a door before you feel the door with the back of your hand. DO NOT OPEN A HOT DOOR. If it feels cool, it should be safe to enter. Bracing the door with your foot, open slightly and place your hand across the opening to determine the temperature of the air. If the air appears to be cool, proceed cautiously.
  • STAY AWAY FROM AREAS WHERE SMOKE IS PRESENT. If smoke should enter the area you are in, get down on your hands and knees. Cleaner, more breathable air can usually be found at about 18 inches from the floor. Crawl to the nearest exit.
  • Do not try to be a hero.
  • Again, BE CALM, help is on the way.
MEDICAL EMERGENCIES

If an injury or a serious illness occurs to an employee or customer, the following procedure is suggested.
  • Phone the ambulance at 911. Give the building name and address, your store's name, phone number and your name. State the location of the emergency. Convey any details of the injury or illness; what happened, phone number of people involved, what is being done, etc.
  • Contact Management or Security at (781) 273-5555. Give the building name and address, your store's name, phone number and your name. State the location of the emergency. Convey any details of the injury or illness; what happened, phone number of people involved, what is being done, etc.
  • Avoid unnecessary movement or action that might cause further injury to the individual.
It is highly recommended that every store have at least one employee trained in basic first aid techniques. In the event of an emergency, temporary first aid can be administered until trained professionals arrive.

POWER FAILURE
  • In the event of a power failure in your demised premises, please notify the local utility company.
  • Should a power failure occur throughout the Shopping Center, the building’s fire alarm system, exit signs and emergency lights will be powered by a backup power supply.
  • The building's backup power supply is for life safety purposes only, and does not provide backup for Merchant equipment.
  • Merchants should take their own measures to protect their equipment against possible fluctuations and outages of electrical power.
If the power failure is associated with a fire emergency, all procedures for a fire emergency should be followed. If not, you will be provided with appropriate instructions for action.

BOMB THREATS

If anyone receives a telephone call informing them that a bomb has been placed in their store or elsewhere at Wayside Commons, the receiver should try to remain calm, keep the caller on the line as long as possible, encourage conversation and note the following:
  • Time of call
  • Is the caller a man or women
  • Write down the message given word for word
  • Tell the caller, "I do not understand," then ask them to repeat the message. This will give you more time to think and possibly get additional information
  • Ask where the bomb is located; the store and/or area
  • Ask when and how is the bomb set to explode
  • Observe background noises
  • Ask why they want to hurt someone
Try to keep the caller on the line and alert someone else to notify the Burlington Police Department at 911 and Management at (781) 273-5555. Once contacted, the Police Department will direct you to take the proper action.

RIOTS AND PUBLIC DEMONSTRATIONS

In the event of a civil disturbance, such as a demonstration or a riot near the Shopping Center, lock your store, close all window coverings and stay away from windows. Vacate the store only at your discretion or the direction of the authorities.

If you notice a disturbance, contact the police and Security.

STORMS AND HURRICANES

Should a severe storm develop that would necessitate early closing, all stores will be notified by Security or Management. In the event that Wayside Commons cannot open due to severe conditions during the night, there will be a recorded message on the Management answering machine (??) and the closing will be broadcast over local radio stations.

Merchants should notify Management immediately of any damage to the building or their premises, i.e. leaks, broken glass, electrical/mechanical problems, etc.
